What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world around them.

Autism is a spectrum condition which means it affects people in many different ways.  There are some behaviours and ways of behaving that an autistic person may use but these aren't universal as every autistic person is different.  Like all people autistic people have their own strengths and weaknesses.  Below is a list of difficulties some autistic people may share.

Why visuals?

Visual supports use pictures and symbols to help a child or young person to communicate with others, to know what is going to happen next and to help explain abstract concepts.

For example:-

A visual timetable shows a clear sequence of events which can help with the transition from one activity to another and help ease anxiety.

A communication keyring can help a non-verbal person or someone who is in crisis mode to communicate their needs to others.

A social story uses symbols to explain what will happen in certain situations, for example, visiting the dentist.  They can also provide a visual script explaining how to behave in certain situations, for example, taking turns with others.
